Emergency Room
Introduction
The Emergency Room (ER) at Pikeville Medical Center treats people who are critically ill and are in a life threatening medical crisis. The ER is staffed 24 hours a day. Our physician staff includes Board Certified ER Physicians, Board Certified MD's in Family Practice, Internal Medicine and Physician Assistants. The Nursing Staff is trained in all aspects of emergency care and are certified in ACLS (Adult Cardiac Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support). Many of our nurses also have specialty certifications such as CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) and TNCC (Trauma Nursing Care Course). The Emergency Department is currently in the process of designing a new and up-to-date department equipped with all of the latest diagnostic equipment to better serve patients.
The Emergency Room is involved in the emergency preparedness plan of the Hospital and the community. Two disaster drills are performed annually to check the processes in place to care for disaster victims and mass casualties. In addition, the staff stays well-informed on the issue of bio-terrorism and has remained up-to-date on the latest information from the Center for Disease Control, the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the Emergency Nurses Association.
Urgent Care & Fast Track
Urgent Care and Fast Track are areas of the emergency room department that treat non emergencies, and non life threatening illnesses and injuries.
These areas are staffed with trained emergency room physicians, physician assistants, and nurses.
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)
The Emergency Room has a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner team specially trained and licensed to assist adolescents (14 and above) and adults who have been sexually assaulted. Our SANE RN’s work side by side with the Police Detectives to examine victims and collect evidence that could be used in the criminal case. The SANE Nurses are on call 24 hours a day seven days a week to assist victims.
