Rationale

Motivating employees to pursue a healthier lifestyle is an important step for all companies in the 21st century.

With increasing evidence supporting health promotion programs in the workplace, more companies than ever are implementing health and wellness strategies to reduce injuries, health care costs and long-term disability.

Escalating health care costs continue to remain an issue of great concern for many health care professionals, employers and insurance companies.

If you can reduce the burden of illness among your workforce by preventing the major causes of sickness, more of your employees will remain healthy and productive. You may even save money in the process.

What are the benefits of WELLNESS?
  • Improved Productivity
  • Reduced sick leave / absenteeism
  • Reduced use of health benefits
  • Reduced worker's compensation
  • Reduced injury experience
  • Lower turnover rate
  • Improved employee morale
  • Increased employee loyalty
  • Improved employee decision making

Reports show that healthier employees spend fewer days away from work due to illness, saving the company thousands and even millions of dollars on down time and temporary help.

Here are a few examples of how wellness programs work:

At DuPont, each dollar invested in workplace health promotion yielded $1.42 in lower absenteeism costs over a 2 year period.
American Journal of Public Health, September 1990

Johnson and Johnson reduced their absenteeism rate by %15 within two years of introducing their wellness program. They also cut their hospital costs by %34 after just three years.
Human Resources Executive, April 1993

Sony Corp. of America analyzed claims data from 1998 to 1990 and found that 50% of it's indemnity plan costs were incurred by employees with medical conditions that were lifestyle-related, or that could be changed.
Employee benefits Plan Review, January 1992

Five reasons for Work Site Wellness

Reason #1 : Health Care Costs
We spend over $1 trillion dollars in this country alone on health care - far more than any other nation in the world. The average annual health care cost per person in the United states far exceeds $3000 - lifetime costs are somewhere in the neighborhood of $225,000.

Reason #2 : Most Illness Can Be Avoided
Experts suggest preventable illnesses make up 70% of the entire burden of illness and associated costs in the U.S. Behind those illnesses are a host of preventable factors including tobacco use, high-risk alcohol consumption, sedentary lifestyles and poor nutritional habits. By leveraging a health promotion initiative, employers can take important steps toward preventing unnecessary sickness and death.

Reason #3 : The Work Week is Expanding
The typical American now works 47 hours a week - 164 more hours a year - than 20 years ago. Without question, an ever-growing work week poses a number of threats to the health and well-being of your employees. However, health promotion programs can alleviate some of these concerns.

Reason #4 : The Technology Revolution is On
Since 1983, American businesses have added 25 million new computers to the nation's business operations. Our increased reliance on technology has ushered in a whole host of health concerns including repetitive stress injuries, low back problems and compromised vision. Left unaddressed, these issues can have a serious impact in terms of the health of your employees and to your company checkbook.

Reason #5 : Employee Stress Levels are Increasing
In a recent nationwide poll, 78% of Americans describe their job as stressful. The vast majority indicated that their stress levels have worsened over the past ten years. If left unchecked, high levels of stress will exact a very real toll on your business, from increased accidents, to reduced productivity, to unnecessary absenteeism and increased medical care costs.

Corporate Testimonials

"We have been searching for a Wellness Program that we could offer to all our employees on a consistent basis year after year. Tim Hatfield, Pikeville Medical Center, contacted me last year and told me about the Health Advantage Program. This program is just the type of program that we have been searching for. A provider that would be willing to service all our locations throughout Kentucky and West Virginia as well as provide a quality service.

We chose to pursue the program with PMC last year and have been very pleased with the results. 422 employees participated last year and we anticipate even better participation this year.

I believe this program is terrific. The program provides a great value to the employee as well as to the company. The program provides a big bang for the buck not only to the employee but also the company.

Many people hesitate to see a physician, take an annual physical, etc.

This program provides a service that does not replace the annual physical but certainly is the next best thing. Several potential health problems were discovered through this program that may have not been recognized until a much more serious condition appeared. It is like I told the employees in our kick off meetings last year, "If one life is saved by offering you this service, it is worth every penny that the company has spent."

Excellent value, excellent program, an excellent employee benefit."
