Medical Leader Girls’ All-Area Team: Shelby Valley’s Rose leads elite squad

PIKEVILLE — Shelby Valley senior Summer Rose was the heart and soul of Lady Cat basketball throughout the 2017-18 season.

She was a dominating force on both ends of the floor and guided Valley to the 15th Region All-A Classic championship and state-runners-up.

Rose has been honored by being named the Medical Leader’s Player of the Year. She averaged 10.7 points per game as the Lady Cats finished 29-5.

She is joined by other seniors, including Betsy Layne’s Megan Frazier (19.7 ppg.), teammate Kayla Newsom (10.4 ppg.) and Jenkins’ Lala Watts (14.9 ppg.).

Juniors selected include Pike Central’s Cassidy Mullins (14.3 ppg.) and Pikeville’s Kelsey Jo Tackett (9.2 ppg.).

Phelps’ Danielle Prater (21.3 ppg.) is the lone sophomore. Rounding out the first team are Belfry freshman McKenzie Maynard (12.6 ppg.), Floyd Central freshman Katie Moore (15.1 ppg.) and Shelby Valley eighth-grader Cassidy Rowe (9.9 ppg.).

Pikeville senior Grace Bartley (10.1 ppg.) captains the second team. The only other senior is Paintsville’s Presley Chirico (10 ppg.).

Juniors include Johnson Central’s Ashley Belcher (12.1 ppg.), Pikeville’s Leslie Stewart (9.7 ppg.), Prestonsburg’s Reesce Endciott (17.9 ppg.), Letcher Central’s Emma Maggard (10.7 ppg.), Pike Central’s Kayla Stanley (13 ppg.) and Paintsville’s Anna Keeton (10 ppg.).

Sophomores are Pike Central’s Bailey Birchfield (10.4 ppg.) and Mingo Central’s Katie Ball (18.1 ppg.).

Mingo Central’s Xziah Rhodes captains the third team. The sophomore averaged 12 ppg.

Seniors on the team include Betsy Layne’s Destiny Compton (15.4 ppg.), Piarist School’s Lauren Wright (14.1 ppg.), East Ridge’s Hannah Mullins (11.7 ppg.) and Shelby Valley’s Kyleigh Tackett (6.5 ppg.).

Freshman are Jenkins’ Jerrica Thacker (11.6 ppg.), Johnson Central’s Sammi Sites (9.6 ppg.), Prestonsburg’s Alivia Slone (16.8 ppg.) and Tug Valley’s Makayla May (11 ppg.).

Floyd Central seventh-grader Abby Maggard (11 ppg.) rounds out the team.

Johnson Central’s Darrin Rice was named Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Eagles to the Sweet 16. The Lady Eagles finished 20-13 after starting the season 4-10.

Rice edged out Shelby Valley’s Rodney Rowe for the honor. He guided the Lady Cats to the 15th Region semifinals and All A crown.
