Medical Leader News - Hospital employee runs race: Sanders completes 26-mile marathon for second timeHospital employee runs race: Sanders completes 26-mile marathon for second time
GOODY — Alan Sanders lives life on the run — literally. During the day, Sanders serves as a member of Pikeville Medical Center’s maintenance team. After work, it isn’t unusual seeing Sanders running around town.
“I try to run six times a week,” Sanders said before the ninth-annual Hatfield- McCoy Marathon and Half- Marathon on June 14.
“It takes a lot of discipline to do this, but I enjoy this.”
Sanders, who participated in the event for the fourth consecutive year, ran the 26- mile marathon for the second time. He ran the 26- mile course in 5:02:59 in 2005 before running the half marathon back-to-back years in 2006 and 2007.
“I wanted to beat my time in 2005,” Sanders said. “It was a goal to finish below five hours.”
He did just that, finishing with a time of 4:27:42.
Sanders said in addition to running throughout the week, he would “try to squeeze in a 15 or 20 mile run on the weekends.”
Why run?
“It’s a great escape,” Sanders added. “It’s rewarding to work and accomplish these types of things… Running teaches self-discipline.”
Sanders said the Hatfield-McCoy Marathon offers a challenging course that showcases the region to runners from across the globe.
“It’s great to have something like this so close to home.”
