Medical Leader News - Gas altering summer travel plansGas altering summer travel plans
PIKEVILLE — Gasoline prices have many area residents altering their summer travel plans.
Driving an automobile these days is expensive, and as such, requires close management of gasoline consumption.
“It’s really hard to plan to go anywhere with gas prices on the rise like they are,” Harold resident Chuck Miller said. “But, it’s not fair to tell your children you can’t go off for the summer, either.”
When traveling, make sure your vehicle is in good running condition. Cars that are not tuned up tend to consume more gas, especially on long trips, than cars that are well serviced.
Belfry resident Sherry Young, a mother of two, says she’s already cut back on unnecessary trips.
“I would normally go to the store a couple times each week, but now I only go when it’s necessary,” she said.
Another contributor to high gasoline use is air conditioning units in vehicles. This is an added burden on your car engine.
“The big thing is, though, if you travel, especially during the summer months, it’s not easy to drive without the air conditioner on,” said Betty Williamson, of Zebulon. “I might turn it down to low, but I’m not going to turn it off.”
The more you are packing on summer vacation the more gas consumption you’ll have when traveling.
“Our entire family of five can hardly limit what we take with us,” said Bart Tackett, of Pikeville. “When you are going off to the beach for a week, there’s a number of things you need.”
When traveling, remember that gas consumption and speeding are synonymous.
“I think if you’re going on vacation you’re not really going to pay much attention to gas prices,” Christopher Porter, of Elkhorn City, said. “I know I don’t.”
Robert Maynard, of Chloe Road, said a car should improve your standard of living, not lower it.
“The biggest thing is you can’t just park your car,” he said.
