PIKEVILLE ó Several local organizations are working together to keep residents in eastern Kentucky and southern West Virginia fit this fall.

The first-ever Southern West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky Hatfield & McCoy: A Healthy Feud walking challenge begins on September 9.

The event is being coordinated through West Virginia on the Move, West Virginia University Healthcare, the Mingo County Diabetes Coalition and the Pike County Health Department.

Teams of between five and 20 people on both sides of the Tug Valley River are asked to register for the challenge. Participants will walk 100 miles in 100 days.

Other forms of aerobic exercise is also permitted, with 20 minutes of exercise equaling one mile of walking.

Team members and/or team captains are required to register their teamsí progress on a weekly basis, and the progress will be tracked online at http://mingodiabetes.com/walk.

Teams are asked to register by September 6, and a registration fee of $6 per person if team members want a commemorative t-shirt.

Registration is available online by emailing the teamís name, team captain and the team captainís email address to getfit@mingodiabetes.com.
