The University of Pikeville men's tennis team.

PIKEVILLE - The University of Pikeville men's tennis team raised some eyebrows recently when, before it had resumed playing after a several-year hiatus, it received votes in the preseason ratings.

It raised even more last weekend when the Bears won the championship in six of the nine flights of the University of Charleston Invitational Tournament.

Pikeville won three of the six individual titles and all three doubles championship and was the only NAIA school in a field otherwise consisting of NCAA Div. II programs.

The Bears will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 25 when they open Mid-South Conference play with a match at Lindsey Wilson College.

Sergei Krasilnikov won the No. 2 singles title with a win over Simon Meriau of Davis and Elkins, winning the championship 6-3, 6-2. He opened the flight with a win over Bluefield State's Vlad Catlan, the No. 26 ranked player in ITA, 7-5, 7-5, and followed it with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Javier Yim Kim of West Virginia Wesleyan.

Sven Rodenbusch was the winner of the No. 5 singles championship. In the finals, he knocked off Niklas Sparr of Bluefield State by scores of 7-5, 6-3. He opened with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ohio Dominican's Brandon Taylor, and followed it with a semifinal decision over Nathan Savill of West Virginia Wesleyan. In the finals, he knocked off Bluefield State's Sreeram Gautam by scores of 6-4, 6-2.

In No. 1 singles, Dmitry Babenkov lost to Matt Sherba 3-6, 6-3 with an 0-1 score in the tiebreaker.

No. 3 singles saw Connor Smith reach the finals before calling to Joel Izquierdo of West Virginia Wesleyan 7-6, 0-6, 0-1 (10-8).

En route to the finals, he picked up wins over Tyler McCullough of West Liberty 6-3, 6-0 and Tyler Bonadonna of Ohio Dominican 6-3, 6-1.

Marcos Sernandez Fondelius was beaten in the semifinals of the No. 4 singles bracket when he lost to Ayman Barakat of West Liberty 6-6, 7-6, 0-1. He opened the tournament with a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan's Aitor Reparaz.

The No. 1 flight of doubles was taken by Babenkov/Krasilnikov, who beat Ohio Dominican's Badowski/Johnston 8-1 in the finals.

They opened with a 9-8 (10-4) win over Charleston's Humphrey/Okoth before a 9-7 semifinal win over Concord's Monterio/Araugo.

In No. 2 doubles, Fondelius/Rodenbusch beat Bluefield State's combo of Kapur/Pickering 8-6.

In the semifinals they bested Ohio Dominican's Mokry/Perez 8-2 after opening with an 8-5 win over Charleston's Sherba/Williams.

In No. 3 doubles, the title was won by Connor Smith and Oliveira.

They opened with an 8-1 win over Jarrett/Seymour of Charleston before beating Oliveira/Savill 8-3.

The championship came over Ohio Dominican's Banian/Bonadonna by a score of 8-2.

GEORGETOWN - No. 12 Georgetown College took control late in the first half and rolled past No. 20 University of Pikeville 74-49 on Feb. 2.

Pikeville (14-8, 6-5 in the Mid-South Conference) could have drawn even with the Tigers and tied for second place in the league standings, but a 7-0 run down the stretch of the first half led the home team to the win.

A basket from the baseline by Trevor Setty with 6:48 remaining pulled the Bears within one at 16-15, but the 2:13 run led to the demise of the Bears. Johonne Hamilton started it with a free throw, and his basket with 4:54 left made it 23-15.

After Kenny Rhymes stopped the bleeding, the Tigers outscored the Bears 9-2, as the guests made only a pair of free throws in four tries for a four-minute stretch. Hamilton's layup with 49 seconds left made it 32-19 before a basket by Andrew Young pulled the Bears within 11 at the break.

The teams played evenly in the first five minutes of the second half, with Georgetown leading 42-30 before an 8-0 run led to a 17-5 stretch to put the game on ice.

It opened with four from senior Jordan DeMercy and ended with six in a row by Allen Thomas, with the final points coming with 9:08 left to make it 59-35.

Georgetown (18-5) took the lead in the MSC standings with an 8-3 mark, moving a half-game in front of idle Lindsey Wilson. The Tigers shot 50.8 percent from the floor to help them overcome 1-of-10 shooting from the arc.

Pikeville, meanwhile, was a miserable 26.3 percent overall and 20 percent from the three-point stripe.

Garel Craig led four Tigers in double figures with 17 points. He was joined by Thomas with 14, senior Jordan DeMercy with 13 and Morris with 11.

The Bears got 19 from Setty, who moved from 24th to 22nd on the all-time scoring list with 19 markers, giving him 1,101 to this point in his career. Shane Burrell followed with 13 points. His eight rebounds led the Bears to a 43-41 edge on the glass, with 18 of them coming off the offensive glass.

At Georgetown

SCORE BY HALVES:

UP (14-8)..................21 28 - 49

GC (18-5)..................32 42 - 74

Scoring:

UPIKE (49) - Chris McHenry 0 2-2 2; Andrew Young 2 1-1 5; Josh Whitaker 1 0-2 2; Cordaro Ellis 1 0-0 2; Trevor Setty 4(3) 2-6 19; Chris Puckett 0(1) 0-2 3; Kenny Rhymes 1 0-0 2; Kyan Hines 0 1-4 1; and Shane Burrell 2 9-14 13.
